About Us

The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences is located off Kapenguria Road, 14 kms. to the Northwest of Nairobi. As the University has evolved, so too has the college. The college has a fully stocked library, a Field station at Kibwezi and clinics and laboratories to supplement the education provided in lectures. The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences has its origin with the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, one of the oldest degree granting faculties. This faculty was transferred from Makerere University College to the Royal College Nairobi in 1962. Today, students are prepared for various fields in the Veterinary Sciences at both the under-graduate and postgraduate levels, with undergraduate beginning studies in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences. Courses are offered by the following departments:

  • Animal Physiology
  • Animal Production
  • Clinical Studies
  • Public Health,
  • Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • Veterinary Anatomy
  • Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology
  • Biochemistry

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has recently introduced the following Module II programmes:?

  • Bachelor of Vet erinary Medicine (BVM)
  • Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Technology (BLT)
  • Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management and related options
  • A 5 week Certificate Course in Artificial Insemination and Fertility
  • Management
  • A Diploma in Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance.
  • M.Sc. in Wildlife Health and management
  • M.Sc. in Veterinary Parasitology

Plans are underway to introduce more diploma courses in the course of the next academic year. in time, the Faculty of Agriculture joined the Faculty of Veterinary medicine in the College of Agriculture first offered coursework during the 1970-71 session under five departments. Students now pursue studies under the following eight departments:?

  • Agricultural Economics
  • Environmental ; Biosystems Engineering
  • Animal Production
  • Food Technology and Nutrition
  • Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology
  • Soil Science
  • Range Management
  • Plant Science and Crop Protection

The Institute of Dry land Research, Development and Utilization was established in 1995 with the main objective being the establishment of appropriate research and academic programmes and suitable utilization of dry lands, under the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. The two major areas which the Institute is currently addressing are:

  1.  Growing of crops under irrigation and rainfed conditions including ranching activities.
  2.  Dissemination of technologies developed in the Institute to the local communities living in the dryland areas of Kibwezi where the Institute has 5,400 ha of land; approximately 250 km from Nairobi.
