ABSTRACT

This research aims to determine the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation postbiotic on the performance and egg quality in layer chickens.  With the increasing demand for maize as human food and animal feed, competition and costs have gone up. In practice, postbiotics have shown potential in unlocking nutrients in feeds, and improving ration quality. However, the impact of postbiotics on nutrient digestibility and energy utilization is unexplored and documentations are minimal. Thus, the overall objective of this study will be to evaluate the effects of postbiotic supplementation on the performance of layer chickens, egg quality, and feed digestibility.

The study will be conducted at the poultry unit, Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi, Kenya. A total of 480 Isa Brown layer chickens will be assigned 4 treatment groups with 10 replicates and 12 birds per replicate. Feed and water intake, egg production, egg quality parameters as well as digestibility of feeds will be monitored for 6 months. Statistical analysis will be performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) in GenStat (Version 14) statistical package and significant treatment means will be separated using Tukey’s test (P ≤ 0.05).

The expected outputs will be a comprehensive thesis, at least two research papers, and the determination of the nutritional matrices of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products. The findings will contribute to our understanding of the potential benefits of Saccharomyces cerevisiae postbiotics in layer chicken nutrition and provide insights into improving performance, egg quality, and feed utilization in poultry production. This research will in the future help address the need for sustainable and cheaper solutions of ensuring efficient feed utilization which will improve the performance of layer chickens as well as egg production and quality. Improved profitability for layer chicken farmers will be achievable.
