Overview
The overall goal of the program is to equip learners with knowledge and skills in animal nutrition and feeding, animal feed resources in order to detect gaps in animal nutrition and to undertake academic responsibility in research, consultancies and teaching in animal nutrition.

The programme shall run over a minimum four and a maximum of ten semesters of fifteen weeks each.

The programme shall be by coursework, examination and thesis. The research work for a thesis shall be undertaken after successful completion of coursework

Students shall be required to take all the prescribed courses.

Students shall be required to take a minimum of three courses and a maximum of seven courses in a semester.

Minimum Admission requirements
The following shall be eligible for admission:
- Holders of the following degree awards of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualifications from universities or institutions recognized by the senate of the University of Nairobi;
Credit Transfer and Exemptions
Applicants may be exempted from some courses and credits transferred from institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi senate. The candidate must have passed in similar course units at the Master’s level or equivalent. Applicants seeking transfer of credit shall send a formal application to the Academic Registrar, through the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine/Agriculture as the case may be, giving justification for the request, and attaching officially endorsed supporting credentials. Candidates may be allowed to transfer up to one-third of the taught units. Application for transfer of credit shall be processed after payment of the prescribed non-refundable fees. The credit transfer shall only be valid for theory courses that shall have been attended and passed within the last five years.
- Holders of a pass degree or equivalent qualifications as listed above with either a relevant post-graduate diploma or five years’ experience.
- Holders of Lower Second-class Honours degree with at least two years relevant experience Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine Bachelor of Science with at least Upper Second-Class Honours in Agriculture, Range Management, Food Science and Technology, Fisheries, Wildlife management or Zoology.

PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of this programme is to train the personnel who can appreciate the basic nutrient needs of domestic animals, the source of these nutrients and the practical aspects of combining these sources to maximize productivity.
RATIONALE
The capability of production of animal products is faced by myriad problems that are compounded by the need to feed an ever-growing human population. Some of the problems include competition for land with crops and urban development, competition for feed ingredients with human population, competition for space, global warming and need to provide environmental control for animal growth and production and ever-changing animal diseases patterns.
To adequately address these challenges, specialized knowledge, encompassing appreciation, of the whole livestock production system is necessary to enable correct decision making for satisfactory and profitable livestock production. The decisions made must facilitate the efficient and sustainable production of different livestock species in the different ecological zones. They must also consider and utilize the latest knowledge and research, and through study contribute to livestock production systems knowledge and skills. High calibre persons need to be trained in this field hence the need for this programme.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:
- Develop practical solutions to animal feeding problems.
- Formulate proposals and research solving animal nutrition-related problems.
MODE OF DELIVERY
Face-to-Face Mode
Lectures, laboratory practical demonstrations, dissections, tutorials, group discussions and class exercises.
Open, Distance and E-Learning Mode
Home and/or office-based media using a variety of self-instructional electronic and online self-study materials, such as; written self-instructional study modules, online interactive devices and self-tests, cloud-based content, videos of lectures mediated technical learning materials e.g. audiovisual and e-learning materials.
Blended Learning Mode
A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.

The course shall be offered face-to- face either as full-time or part-time, or through Open, Distance and e-Learning (OdeL) modes of study.
Candidate shall be required to attend at least 2/3 of the class sessions and related learning activities offered for each of the coursework units in the first year of study before sitting for the respective examinations. A candidate shall be required to undertake coursework for all courses offered in each semester of the first year of study. On successful completion of the coursework, students shall carry out a supervised research project on a specialized field of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, write and submit a thesis for examination at the end of the study period.
2. Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL):
The Open, Distance and E-Learning programme will run for two (2) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each. This module is largely home and or office-based and includes:
- Written self-instructional study modules including
- Course study materials e.g. booklets
- Relevant literature
- Interactive devices and self-tests
- Face to face introductory tutorials.
- Mediated technical learning materials for example: Audio visual; E-Iearning.
- Support study centres at the University of Nairobi.
- Access to information through computers at the University of Nairobi and other resource centres.
- Use of libraries at the University of Nairobi and other institutions.
This is combination of traditional, face-to-face learning and online digital learning
