Philosophy, Rationale

COURSE DURATION: Two (2) years

PHILOSOPHY

The programme philosophy is guided by the institution’s need to connect and inspire the Kenyan community, to provide leadership and stewardship and to give hope and faith to the Kenyan society that it can excel in whatever it chooses to do with passion, morals responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism. The training of professionals in this programme is informed by the sustained evidence in support of the important and multidimensional role that nutrition play in human growth and development; productivity, and wellbeing.

Globally, the field has gained greater eminence with the surge in lifestyle-related (non-communicable) diseases as well as increased demand and rationale, for preventive approaches in public health. Training professionals in Applied Human Nutrition makes a vital human resource development contribution in clinical and public health sectors as well as in multiple economic and development sectors.

RATIONALE

The current MSc Applied Human Nutrition is a two-year course and is being revised for the first time since its inception in the early 1980s. The programme has been aligned to the regulatory and statutory requirements. The MSc Applied Human Nutrition sector is dynamic, with several changes taking place over the last 5 years, most notably the government’s attempt to harmonize and regulate all Human Nutrition courses at Masters Level.

All institutions training Nutritionists especially offered at the university level in Kenya, now have a regulatory body, the Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians (KNDI). The units/courses offered to take into account emerging trends in Human Nutrition, landscaped to address not just malnutrition but also the double and now triple burden of malnutrition. Both prevalence rates of malnutrition, non-communicable diseases (diabetes and cancer alongside infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS) and manmade and natural disasters are on the increase thus have led to a higher demand for appropriately trained nutritionists at the managerial level. Proper, adequate and timely training of Human Nutritionists. The training will lead to ensuring the implementation and success of nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific interventions

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate leadership and entrepreneurial skills in applied human nutrition.
  2. Assess community nutritional problems from a multi-disciplinary point of view.
  3. Apply information technology in generating realistic and feasible intervention measures.
  4. Implement investigations in the field of applied nutrition and disseminate findings to the relevant stakeholders.
  5. Develop nutrition policy documents that positively impact Human Nutrition actors.
