Philosophy of the program

Kenya’s, and generally Africa’s population growth is one of the fastest globally. The question of the future food security for this increasing population is the greatest challenge facing the peoples of Africa and their governments. There is also growing demand for animal protein due to improved standards of living. As population increases, incomes rise and urbanization increases, foods of animal origin will have to be availed either from local production or imported.

Capability of production of animal products is faced by myriad problems that are compounded by need to feed an ever-growing human population. Some of the constraints include competition for land with crops and urban development, competition for same ingredients used as human food for animal feed, competition for space, global warming and need to provide environment control for animal growth and production and ever-changing animal diseases patterns. In the developing world, feed is the biggest constraint to animal production both in terms of availability (quantity) and the quality.

To adequately address these challenges (especially feed resources), there is need for personnel who can appreciate the basic nutrient needs of domestic animals, the source of these nutrients and the practical aspects of combining these sources to maximize productivity. In addition, there is need for researchers in this field. High caliber persons need to be trained in this field, hence the need for this programme.

Rationale of the Programme

  1. Needs assessment/market survey/situation analysis

A new “intensive” curriculum in agriculture that incorporates significant animal science content has been developed. The curriculum for bachelor of veterinary medicine degree has also been reviewed. There is need to maintain the popularity of the programme through making inclusion of suitable content and thesis projects that address practical nutritional challenges. The content will incorporate core generic animal production courses and specialized animal nutrition content all focusing on animal science problem identification and solving. The expected result will be a more appropriate and attractive programme that will be completed within stipulated time period.
