Overview

i. To develop human resource capacity in Fisheries and Aquiculture Management.

ii. To develop entrepreneurship and relevant skills for industrial application in the fish value chain.

iii. To provide training and research in Fisheries and Aquiculture Management to improve food security and community livelihoods

Structure

Course structure and Duration:

The Degree course shall consist of 41 Units;comprising lectures,practicals,demonstrations,seminars,field and industrial training/attachment,Research project and examinations.The programme shall be offered via two modules;full time (Module I and II) and through Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) (Module III).

FULL-TIME:

i. A candidate shall take a minimum of 4 academic years and a maximum of 8 academic years.

ii. Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters each, except during the third year of study which will have a third semester.

iii. Each semester shall consist of 15 weeks inclusive of teaching and examinations, while the third semester shall be 8 weeks.

iv. A candidate shall be required to undertake training and complete all the course work and practical assignments that are prescribed for th Bachelors of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture Management.

v. A candidate shall be required to take a relevant Field Attachment during the third semester at the end of the third year of study and Industrial Training and Attachment in the First Semester of the fourth year of study. The candidate shall identify the institution(s) for attachment, which shall be approved by the Faculty Projects and Attachment Committee.

vi. During the third semester of the third year and first semester of the fourth year of study, a candidate will be required to develop a research project proposal relevant to any field of Fisheries and Aquaculture Management. The project proposal shall be executed and a technical report submitted for examination to the Faculty Projects and Attachment Committee, at least six weeks before the end of the final semester of study. A candidate shall be expected to consult their supervisors while developing and executing the project proposal and preparing the technical report.

Minimum Admission Requirements

The following shall eligible for admission:

  1. Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with mean grade C+ or equivalent with at least a C in Biology, or Biological Science, and a minimum of a C in any one of the following subjects; Chemistry, Physics, Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Mathematics or Geography.
  2. KCSE mean grade C – in KSCE with a diploma in a relevant field with credit from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
  3. At least D (Plain) in KCSE with a Certificate and a relevant Diploma from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
  4. At least 2 Principal passes in KACE. One of these passes must be in Biology and the other in any science subject.
  5. Holders of a relevant Diploma from a recognized institution.
  6. Holders of a Degree in biological science from a recognized institution.
  7. Any other international qualification that is equivalent to KCSE like IGSCE & GCE, subject to Senate’s approval.
  8. At least Higher National Diploma and other relevant professional qualifications as advised by faculty to join year
  9. Non-English-speaking applicants should undertake an English language proficiency test before admission.

Credit Transfers and Exemptions

Credit Transfer

  1. The credit transfer shall be applicable for a candidate from Universities or institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.
  2. The number of hours, content and grading of course(s) for which credit transfer is sought shall be similar to the degree courses offered at the University of Nairobi.
  3. Only grades of C and above shall be transferred.
  4. Transfer of credits shall not be more than a third of the total prescribed courses required for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture Management.
  5. Credit transfer shall not apply to Field Attachment, Industrial Training and Attachment, Research Project and Report and courses in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study.

Exemptions

  1. The Senate of the University of Nairobi may exempt a candidate from some courses on the recommendation of the Faculty Academic Committee and approval.
  2. A candidate shall have attended those courses in a University or an institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi and had a Pass grade.
  3. A candidate seeking such exemptions shall submit a duly completed form approved by the Senate; specifying the course(s) for which exemption is desired and attach evidence of 3.2.2 above, showing the contents of what was studied.
  4. Courses specified in 3.2.3 are to satisfy the requirements for the first year of study only.  A candidate who requires an exemption from courses in the second, third or fourth year of study shall in the absence of credit transfer, be required to sit university examination(s) and attain at least a pass grade, which will then be used in the classification of the degree.
  5. Exemptions shall not be applicable for Field Attachment, Industrial Training and Attachment, or Research Project and Report.
  6. Exemptions shall not be allowed for more than one-third of the prescribed courses for the degree program.
  7. A candidate admitted into the 2nd year of study shall be deemed to have already been exempted from 25 % of the total prescribed courses in the degree program.

Philosophy, Rationale

COURSE DURATION: Four (4) years

PHILOSOPHY

The programme philosophy is guided by the need to connect and inspire the Fisheries and Aquaculture community to provide leadership and stewardship, in Fisheries and Aquaculture management and to give hope and faith to the Kenyan society and the world at large that it can excel in Fisheries and Aquaculture sector with passion, moral responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism.

RATIONALE

Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture production is faced with many challenges, which need specialized knowledge in management, efficient and ecological friendly utilization of aquatic resources for increased food and nutritional security. The programme aims to consider and utilise the latest knowledge and practical skills to develop human resources required to provide extension, research, training, technology transfer and agribusiness services in this subsector. Increased Fisheries and Aquaculture production will increase the subsector contribution to national gross domestic product and improve community livelihoods.

The programme is responding to the global aspirations and priorities to enhance fisheries and aquaculture production at a reduced cost, promoting environmental integrity and sustainability amid limited human resource supply in the sector.  The curriculum aims at training potential fisheries and aquaculture managers to integrate productivity with health benefits of the environment, socio-economic and sustainable use of natural resources that directly contribute to meeting Kenya’s long-term development blueprint, Vision 2030 goals on food and nutritional security. Also, the curriculum is aligned to regional and global emerging challenges, including those set by the Sustainable Development Goals and international for sustainable use and conservation of natural resources and the environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:

  1. Use scientific tools, technologies, principles, theories, and models of fisheries and aquaculture to advise in all matters of fisheries and aquaculture management.
  2. Apply skills and knowledge to sustainably increase fisheries and aquaculture production for enhanced food security and promote fish health and welfare.
  3. Interpret and apply laws and policies in fisheries for sustainable development of aquatic resources.
  4. Conduct high-quality research, consultancies, and extension services for improved food and nutritional security
  5. Develop marketing and entrepreneurial skills for industrial application in the fish value chain for improved livelihoods.

Utilize knowledge and skills acquired in a wide range of careers to solve current and emerging challenges in the Fisheries and Aquaculture sector.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-to-Face Mode

Lectures, tutorials, practical and post mortem demonstrations, clinical and surgical rotations handling surgical animal patients, assignments on topical subjects for class discussions in presence of the lecturer and self-study as well as scheduled or take-away continuous assessment tests.

Open, Distance and E-Learning Mode

Home and/or office-based media using a variety of self-instructional electronic and online self-study materials, such as; written self-instructional study modules, online interactive devices and self-tests, cloud-based content, videos of lectures mediated technical learning materials e.g. audiovisual and e-learning materials.

Blended Learning Mode

A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.
