Master Of Science in Livestock Production Systems

Overview

The goal of the programme is to contribute to food security through production of high caliber livestock production systems human resource equipped with knowledge and skills to enable problem identification, solving and decision for management of livestock production systems, research, creativity, innovation, teaching and consultancies in livestock production systems.

  • The programme shall run over a minimum four and a maximum of ten semesters of fifteen weeks each.
  • The programme shall be by coursework, examination and thesis. The research work for a thesis shall be undertaken after successful completion of coursework
  • Students shall be required to take all the prescribed courses.
  • Students shall be required to take a minimum of three courses and a maximum of seven courses in a semester.
  1. The common regulations for the Master's degree in all faculties shall apply.
  2. The following shall be eligible for admission:
  3. Holders of the following degree awards of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualifications from universities or institutions recognized by the senate of the University of Nairobi ;
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Bachelor of Science with at least Upper Second-Class Honours in Agriculture, Range management, Wildlife, Zoology and Agricultural economics.

Holders of Lower Second-class Honours degree or with at least two years relevant experience; Holders of a Pass degree or equivalent qualifications as listed in 3 above with either a relevant post-graduate diploma or five years experience

    1. Rationale of the Programme

There is increasing national and regional demands for specialized Livestock Production Systems Analysts. There is therefore need to develop a pool of such persons, who are qualified to conduct Livestock Production Systems training in the universities as well as to carry out research in this field. This Master of Livestock Production Systems programme will meet this need by equipping the graduates with specialized knowledge and competencies in Livestock Production Systems to perform specialized Livestock Production Systems analyses, conduct scientific research, write scientific publications/reports and teach Livestock Production Systems.

Mode of Delivery

The Msc Programme is offered in two modes, namely:

    1. Face to Face Sessions

This will be through a variety of course delivery techniques such as lectures, tutorials, lecture discussions, class presentations, case studies, demonstrations, fieldwork, videos, student lecturer consultations, supervised independent research, group projects, or any combination of these.

    1. Open, Distance and E-Learning (ODeL)

The Open, Distance and E-Learning programme will run for two (2) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each. This module is largely home and or office-based and includes:

  1. Written self-instructional study modules including
    1. Course study materials e.g. booklets
    2. Relevant literature
    3. Interactive devices and self-tests
  2. Face to face introductory tutorials.
  3. Mediated technical learning materials for example: Audio visual; E-Iearning.
  4. Support study centres at the University of Nairobi.
    1. Access to information through computers at the University of Nairobi and other resource centres.
    2. Use of libraries at the University of Nairobi and other institutions.
    1. Blended Learning

This is combination of traditional, face-to-face learning and online digital learning
