Philosophy of the programme
There is need to connect and inspire the Kenyan community provide leadership and stewardship of livestock resources, and give convict Kenyan livestock keepers to excel in management decisions and practices that yield demanded quantities and quality of livestock products and direct their delivery where required. In doing this, livestock production systems doctoral graduates will engender the principle of a shared national commitment to create a well-nourished society that is responsive to community needs, social development and sustainable and efficient use of natural resources in different ecological zones. Thus, reliable and useful ethics, knowledge and skills will be learnt and used to guide future livestock production programmes, interventions and empowerment of livestock farming communities for enhanced food security situation and national development.
Rationale of the programme
1 Needs assessment/market survey/situation analysis
Africa’s population growth is the fastest globally. Food security for this population is the greatest challenge facing the people of Africa and their governments. There is also a growing urge for improved standards of living, especially in demand for quality food that comprises a large proportion of animal protein. Affluence is on the increase. Elsewhere in the world, a rise in affluence is associated with an increase in the consumption of animal products. As incomes rise, foods of animal origin must be made available locally or imported. Currently, Africa is a net importer of livestock products. It is well documented that for every 1% increase in income, 2% more is spent on food of animal origin. Therefore, the demand for animal products has been increasing and will continue to increase in the foreseeable future. Consequently, the need for persons with the critical ability to identify key challenges and find solutions that enable the planning of livestock production systems to meet the demand.
To improve rural livelihoods and environmental security, there is a need to build knowledge and understanding of livestock production systems and underlying political, economic and socio- ecological processes. Specifically, there is a greater need to integrate crop and livestock into crop- livestock systems to enhance circular economy, nutrient recycling, product quality and agricultural sustainability; and reduce production costs. This curriculum aims at training and equipping professionals in livestock production systems of national, regional and international repute with appropriate scientific knowledge and skills required to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies and practices aimed at securing livelihoods.
A PhD in LPS curriculum is developed to enhance the popularity of the programme by introducing coursework to enable the students to take up their thesis projects that address practical production challenges. The content incorporates core research methods in animal science and specialized livestock production systems focusing on animal science problem identification and solving.
