TREE PLANTING EXCERCISE

The University of Nairobi in partnership with the Equity Group Foundation, Kenya Forest Service, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior & Coordination of National government have planned to plant more than 5,000 trees on 18th May 2021 in various parts of the University.

The  5,000 tree seedlings have been donated by the Equity Foundation Group to promote environmental conservation and to stress the importance of fresh air( oxygen) during this period of Covid-19.

About 3,000 trees will be planted on 18th May  2021, at 10.00am  in identified  grounds at  the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Services and the Wangari Maathai Institute. The remaining 2,000 seedlings will be distributed to various campuses to plant in their environs.

The following partners will  lead  the tree planting exercise at the Wangari Maathai Institute at 10.00 am.

HIGH SCHOOL VISITS

Department offers chance for educational tours for high schools. Students are exposed to practical projects run by the department. These include:- Poultry Keeping, Rabbitry, Hatchery and Feed analyses.

FEED ANALYSIS FOR CLIENTS:

The Department of Animal production do feed analysis for the farmers,research institutions,private farms and public farms.The analysis done are Proximate,minerals,invitro,vansoest and Nylon bag experiments.

 1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The Department of Animal Production is one of the oldest departments of the University having started in 1965 as part of the Royal Veterinary Collage, University of East Africa. The Department is administered under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, but is also a full member of the Faculty of Agriculture.  Based on this, all students admitted to the faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine must take courses taught by the Department, including students of Biomedical Technology, Wildlife Management, Food Technology, Range Management and Agricultural engineering.

Apart from undergraduate courses, the Department of Animal Production offers Masters of Science and PhD level courses in Livestock Production Systems, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science and Animal Genetics & Breeding. Based on its multidisciplinary setup, the Department services courses developed in other departments such as PhD in dry land agriculture, agricultural economics. Indeed services from various staff of the department are required to implement teaching and research programs in other colleges of the University, such as College of Biological and Physical Sciences. The department is engaged in robust research resulting into outstanding publications, and consultancy services through nutrition lab, where feed analysis and ration formulation among other services are offered. The revenue from this supplement funds required for teaching and other activities in the laboratory.

The Department has expertise in all areas of livestock enterprises and many of the staff have veterinary medicine and agriculture backgrounds. It is, therefore, well placed to consult in all areas of livestock production such as  Establishment of Commercial animal feed factories, Commercial hatcheries, Commercial poultry production units,  Commercial dairy production units,  Feed formulation, Feeding programs, Livestock farm layout, Livestock housing structures, In addition, the Department  offer  Livestock enterprise and production system advisory services, Evaluation of genetic worth of livestock species, Genetic fingerprinting and Establishment of herd inbreeding levels. In addition to training of graduates, the Department actively participates in the animal industry. The key areas of involvement include; Formulation of animal feeding standards, Bull evaluation for the National Artificial insemination Service, Training of livestock extension staff, ,Participation in various livestock related national committees, Collaborative and non-collaborative research in Animal Science

The Nutrition Laboratory in the Department is one of the leading nutrition labs in the country. It offers the full range of nutritional analysis promptly and accurately. The clientele include feed manufacturing companies, research institutions and livestock farmers

Consultancies available in the Department includes; Establishment of Commercial animal feed factories, Commercial hatcheries, Commercial poultry production units, Commercial dairy production units,. Feed formulation, Feeding programs, Livestock farm layout, Livestock housing structures , Livestock enterprise and production system advisory services, Evaluation of genetic worth of livestock species. The Department boasts of an interactive animal Nutrition Laboratory, Poultry and Rabbit Units.  These areas provide centers’ for research for our Postgraduate and Undergraduate students in addition to Income generation and serving the needs of the community

3.0 DEPARTMENT STRUCTURE AND ADMINISTRATION

  • The department is organised into three  sections: Livestock Production Systems, Nutrition xxxx and Animal Genetics xxxx
  • The department is headed by the Chairman who is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor in consultation with the Principal and the Dean of the Faculty. The Chairman oversees the administrative functions of the department.
  • Section Heads. Appointed by the Chairman of the Department. Their main functions are to co-ordinate the section activities including making draft teaching allocations, allocation of postgraduate supervision, preparation of teaching schedules and postgraduate timetables, organizing postgraduate seminars, drawing of section budgets and procurement schedules.
  • They also co-ordinate academic trips as well admission process for module II programmes
  • Unit Heads. Appointed by the Chairman of Department. The function of the unit heads include co-ordination of teaching at MSc. Levels, sharing of teaching loads within the units,

9.0 SERVICE DELIVERY PLEDGE

  • All lectures shall be conducted fully and on time as per approved timetables.
  • Consolidated mark sheets shall be finalized and sent to the Dean’s Office within one month following end of examinations.
  • Internal Postgraduate supervisors for masters or doctoral degrees will give feedback to their students within the agreeable time after receiving a project or a thesis.
  • Clearance of students within the department shall be finalized within two (2) days.
  • Staff performance appraisal shall be conducted between October and March every academic year.
  • The Department shall observe all financial regulations and procedures
  • The Department shall maintain a healthy, safe and pleasant environment.
  • The Department is an illicit drug-free zone
  • All telephone calls shall be attended to within twenty (20) seconds.
  • Routine correspondence shall be replied to within seven (7) days from the date of receipt.
  • The Department shall not condone impropriety.
  • The Department is a corruption-free zone.
